So How Exactly does a Dryer Work?


Your Dryer has a heating element that heats up to get the clothes dry. When you press the start button, your Dryer sends a message to the control board to start the Dryer, the control sends a message to the motor to spin, and the motor is transfers power to the heating element.

Most of the Dryers are electric Dryers, and need 240 Volts in order to run properly, that power is strong enough to light up the heating element. All the power goes to the control on the Dryer, and the control of the Dryer splits the power to the rest of the machine.

In order to vibrate, the Dryer needs a motor, so the motor will get 120 Volts out of the 240 Volts. The other 120V goes to the heating element, but not before it goes through protective components, such as thermistor (AKA Temperature sensor), Cut-Off fuse and High Limit Thermostat, those components are there to protect your house from catching on fire. If there is any power failure, those parts will go first.

When your Dryer motor runs, it gets 120 Volts and transfers those 120 Volt to the heating element, with no protecting fuse or Thermistor. But, why is there no protective system between your Dryer motor and your heating element? Only because your Dryer heats up to just 240V volts, and whatever happens, it will not dry up if your system fails between the control and the heating element.


How does a Dryer work to dry clothes?


As we mentioned, the Dryer needs heat, but that is not enough, your Dryer also needs air circulation, the simple reason for that is if your Dryer will keep the hot air inside, the hot air will evaporate from the wet clothes, but as soon as the Dryer will stop, the moisture in the air will be liquid again and goes back to the clothes.

So what component pushes the hot air with the moisture out of the Dryer? The blower wheel attached to the motor. Whenever the motor runs, the blower wheel spins with it. The blower wheel has 2 jobs, it needs to suck the air from the heating element, through the Dryer drum full of clothes, though a lint screen, through a duct hose and out of the house. This is the simple act of the Dryer, but as simple as it is, Dryer has many common problems.


Let's talk about common problems with Dryers.


Dryers like Whirlpool are very common appliances, they are also known as very reliable appliances, but even reliable appliances brake every once in a while. When your Dryer is not heating up, do not be surprised, you are not the only this happened to. The most common problem with Whirlpool Dryers is that  it just stops heating. When you call a service guy to check your Dryer, the first thing that he needs to do is to simply test the power outage of the Dryer, as we mentioned before, your Dryer needs to receive 240 Volt, so as an appliance repair technician we need to make sure that your Dryer is getting that power, without that, it will  stop working  or  give you problems.

The second thing the appliance technician needs to do is to run the Dryer and make sure that it  heating, some situations happen when a Dryer will heat up but to a very low temperature, and that means that the heating element itself works but something else connected to it doesn't.

After we make sure that there is heat and the Dryer  gets enough power, we need to open up the Dryer and test the heating element, the heating element needs to give us full resistance in order to light up, if the heating element does give us full resistant we need to go and test the high-limit thermostat, and the Cut-Off fuse. If both give us full resistance, now we need to go through your Thermistor (AKA Temperature Sensor).

The thermistor works differently than a heater or a fuse, instead of giving us a full resistance; it gives us a continuity, which means it changes with the temperature change, that's how the system knows to regulate the temperature and not to go over heat.

If we tested all the above, and still no heat, we need to run the Wirlpool Dryer when it is open, with no drum inside, yes, its not safe, that's why you need a proffesional technician to do it.

Your Whirlpool Dryer is heating but not drying your clothes?

This is also a common problem, as we said, your Dryer needs a clean air flow to dry the clothes, if the Dryer vent or the duct system in your house is blocked, the moisture will stay inside your Dryer, it can easily escalate to a fire, and it will not dry, call a service technician to get one of our professional team members to get it fixed, we simply need to clean the lint that caught inside the Dryer and release the blockage, sometimes the Dryer will get clogged for long time and it can also damage the electrical system, so take care of it quickly.

Your Whirlpool Dryer is not spinning?

This  is also very common, we simply need to come and diagnose the problem.

We will start by checking the drive belt and the motor, if the drive belt is gone. The Dryer motor will spin sometimes but will not be connected to the Dryer drum.

More reasons for Dryer not spinning is simply bad controller. But before we check that, we need to make sure that everything else has been tested near the drive motor. There is a pulley that stretches the bely and makes it tightly connected to the drum, underneath the pulley there is a special switch, that switch will protect the system. Once the belt has been ripped off, the pulley will drop down, it will press on the switch that will cut the power to the motor, the controller will send the power to that switch but it will not go to the motor and spin.

Your Dryer is making noise?

When your Dryer is making noise, thats mostly a Dryer that hasn't been serviced for a very long time. Most of the manufactures recommended to get a service technician to come and maintain your Dryer at least once every 2 years.

When you get a Dryer maintained, the technician opens the Dryer and cleans all the lint and puts oil on the mechanical system to keep it going for longer. If you don't keep maintaining your Dryer as recommended, your Dryer will collect lint, that will go to the motion parts and also to the electrical components, it can make it hard on the motion parts to run and eventually make horrible noise and the lint may caught in your heat system and catch on fire. So make sure to take care of your Dryer at least every 2 years.
